In a significant move for agricultural development, SunRice Group, a leading Australian rice exporter, has announced plans to invest in Cambodia by establishing a factory and introducing Japonica rice seeds to the local market. This ambitious proposal was discussed during a meeting between His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia, and Mr. Paul Serra, CEO of SunRice Group, held in Sydney on August 25, 2025.
During their discussions, Mr. Serra outlined his interest in visiting Cambodia to further explore investment opportunities, particularly in setting up a rice processing facility and bringing advanced technologies and seeds for cultivating Japonica rice to the region.
Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol took the opportunity to highlight Cambodia’s favorable investment climate, emphasizing the country’s potential as a prime destination for foreign investments in today’s global market. He noted recent advancements in transport and energy infrastructure, which have significantly improved the business landscape in Cambodia.
Established in 1950, SunRice Group is one of the largest food and rice processing companies in the world, with a robust global presence. The company has a historic connection with Cambodia, being the first Australian entity to export Cambodian rice to markets in Australia and New Zealand. This proposed investment could further strengthen ties between the two nations and boost Cambodia’s position in the global rice market.
As discussions continue, the agricultural community is optimistic about the prospects of increased investment, innovation, and growth within Cambodia’s rice sector.
