TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the price of rice in August 2025 increased compared to the previous year. Deputy of Distribution and Services Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, stated that the price hike occurred at milling, wholesale, and retail levels.

"The average price of rice at milling in August 2025 recorded a total increase of 1.87 percent month-to-month and a 6.15 percent increase year-on-year," Pudji said in a press conference broadcasted on BPS's YouTube channel on Monday, September 1, 2025.

According to Pudji, when sorted by quality at milling, the prices also rose. The price of premium rice in August increased by 2.32 percent compared to the previous month. Compared to August 2024, the price of premium rice has soared by 5.77 percent. Price increases also occurred in medium rice, which rose by 1.46 percent monthly and 6.58 percent annually.

Based on the BPS presentation, the average price of rice at milling in August reached Rp13,596 per kilogram, an increase from July's Rp13,346. Meanwhile, at the wholesale level, the price of rice last month reached Rp14,292, rising from the previous month's Rp14,202 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, at the retail level, the price of rice also surged from Rp15,281 in July to Rp15,393 in August 2025. BPS also noted that there was rice inflation at the wholesale and retail levels in August, monthly at 0.64 and 5.56 percent annually, respectively.

While at the retail level, rice inflation was at 0.73 percent monthly and 4.24 percent annually. Pudji stated that the rice prices reported are the average prices covering various qualities across Indonesia.

BPS reported that Indonesia's economy experienced deflation of 0.08 percent monthly in August 2025. However, rice was one of the commodities contributing to inflation. "There are also commodities that still contribute to inflation in August 2025. Among them are shallots and rice, each at 0.05 and 0.03 percent," Pudji said.
